Surface
Slate, dark stain, anodised aluminium, painted panel. The machine mark is lighter than the surface, so dots land in the bright parts of the photo.
Mask
Drag a shape on the preview to move it, drag a corner to resize. Keep shapes add together, cut shapes take bites out. Use this when the background is the same brightness as the subject, which no tone slider can separate.
Tone
Marked settings change the result on any photo. The rest matter on some photos and barely at all on others, so they are worth a try rather than a rule.
Dots
Tool
A 90 degree V-bit is recommended. Its plunge depth equals the dot radius on a sharp tip, it cuts shallower than a 60 degree bit for the same dot so the run is shorter and the edges tear less, and it is the V-bit most shops already have.
Finished size
Sizes for an upright. The piece is fitted inside the size you pick, keeping the photo's shape.
